Borussia Dortmund and Union Berlin played out a thrilling 1-1 draw in the Bundesliga on Sunday, with both teams showing excellent attacking prowess but ultimately failing to take the three points that would have put them top of the league.
The match began with both sides displaying a high tempo and pressing each other at every opportunity, with both goalkeepers making several key saves to keep their team in the game. However, it was Union Berlin who broke the deadlock first, scoring a stunning goal in the 79th minute thanks to a well-taken penalty kick by substitute forward Alexander Mitrovic.
Dortmund responded immediately, however, as they were able to equalize just moments later through a brilliant strike from midfielder Jude Bellingham. The winger's curling effort found the back of the net and gave his side a glimmer of hope going into injury time.
However, Union Berlin showed great composure in the final stages of the match, with substitute defender Timo Baumgartner heading home a cross in the 88th minute to earn his side a much-needed point. The victory means that Union Berlin now sit just one point behind leaders Bayern Munich, while Borussia Dortmund remain second in the table, four points behind their rivals.
Despite the draw, there were plenty of positives to take away from this match for both teams. Both sides showcased some excellent individual skills and teamwork, and it will be interesting to see how they fare when they return to action next week. In the meantime, fans of both clubs can look forward to another exciting weekend of football, with more matches scheduled to take place across Germany and Europe.
